Fake Notes in ATMs

I have heard about people getting fake/torn notes in ATMs. The best way is to always check the money you have drawn and when you find a torn/fake note to atonce contact the bank from the ATM center and ask for someone to come and verify and vouch for your transaction, so that you can get your money replaced.

Here is a story that I got via email on this (It was passed to me via email and not directly from the person who had the experience and so I cannot vouch for the validity of the same)

This is Regarding Fake 500 note in ICICI ATM Center(Prestige Poseidon,MG Road Branch, Bangalore)

I am Nageshwar Rao working for MindTree Consulting. I had drawn money in ICICI MG Road Branch to deposit in my Dad's account.
I went to DCB to deposit the money. Unfortunately in the notes i had given, one 500 rupee note is a fake note it seems. Moreover it was attached with tape(I mean to say it was a cut note)
They checked that note in some machine and said it was a fake note and they had written FAKE on that note and crumpled the note.
After arguing a lot with the Branch Manager, they had given me the note back(Because i told to them that i want to question the ICICI People and even i am ready to face any circumstance or i am ready to file a police case)

I went to the ICICI Branch(Prestige Poseidon) and told the issue to MR Mohan who is the Person Head in that branch. They asked me to go to ICICI Branch(Next to Central, MG Road)
I went there and introduced myself as MindTree Mind to the Person incharge for ATM Mr Uday and told about the issue.
They said they are not responsible for such things.

They asked me what is the proof that i had drawn that note from their ATM??
I told them clearly that, no one can provide such proof's, and told them to check whether i had made a transaction or not and also if Possible to track the notes they kept at that time.

They said they dont keep track of the notes they put in the ATM, but they will manually chech the notes before putting them in ATM.
They said they will only TRUST their Employees and thier Machines, not the Customers.
They are not at all accepting the facts that such notes will come in ATM's.

Now, Who is Responsible for this. Ultimately i am the loser and i am the sufferer as Rs. 500 is definitely a lot valuable for me, to all. What can we do & how can we know the Fake Notes??

Also the ICICI People told that in their ATM's only new notes will come. So Please Friends, when u r collecting money from ATM's do check whether they are new notes, otherwise inform the Branch Manager.

Hi,

I also have faced the fake note problem, I withdrawn some money from HDFC ATM and went to ICICI bank to transfer some fund in my friend account, ICICI people told me that this note is fake, i moved back to HDFC and these guys aren't accepting that its their note.

They says that they always check the notes before putting it in the ATM machine, and asked me to prove that this note was dispensed by their ATM, how can i (or anyone) prove that, do the bank keep the note number before putting money in the ATM machine.

Sadly, it seems there is no way out... i am frustrated...

i also got a fake 500 rs note from HDFC ATM IN KADAVANDRA ,ERNAKULAM .But I didn't checked that at the same time. Saw that only next day. I reported to the branch office, then employees told me that they are 100% sure, that note , not form their ATM.
what to do, They also told 3 or 4 four people thoroughly checking and counting this notes before place into ATM.
Actually this Fake note racket also in all banks. not only ICICI, but also HDFC, etc.

Hi,

This is from Velachery UTI ATM.

Also the UTIPeople told that in their ATM's only new notes will come. Its not true. I am getting old notes too. See basically the currency is rotation, because ATM is not the one to print the notes , so why not the ATM will release the second hand currency.
The ultimate solution is, ATM should have an inbuilt machine to find fake notes.

Hi,
Just do the Justification
---------------------------------------------------------------
What is the difference between a Common Man or employee from different organization and a Infosys Employee.

You will be surprise that Infosys employees are get less interest loan than others. How it will justified. They Pay from 9 - 10 % rate of interest in all type of loan but where as We outsider we are also same customer like Infosys, but we pay 14% to 18 % for our loan which is nearly 40 - 100% more than Infosys employee. When I raised this question they say it is our Company Policy, if you you can or You can Contact other Bank. When Govt has made a rule 14 % loan interest for the People of India. If they Give so lesser then to Infosys Employee then just imagine How much will for Ministers ,b'cse of minister they get Licence to do the business that why ICICI Bank never follows RBI rule like Putting the Cash in Cover and droping in drop box etc etc....

Every body knows that this type of Loan Bargain happen to the corporate level, that means the Big group of Company when they go for huge loan they bargain with the Bank, but I have never heared in my life time that ICICI Bank is making difference between the Common Man, When we do deposits, We pay service Charge,we do the same as Infosys Employee. You can also fight with Mr. Kamath @ 022 -26538003 and find out what the difference between infosys employee and Common Man ??????

2. I request you to Never take Loan Against any Credit Card
They are Charging 30 % of Interest rate , but they say 24 %.

ICICI Maninagar branch sucks! I picked up money from my Postal Scheme which matured and immediately went to deposit in ICICI yesterday 25th October at 3:00AM. The counter lady - next to Quick Cash counter refused to take currency and said that they only accept cash more than Rs. 50,000. For lesser cash, I need to put it in envelope. I insisted that they accept cash as not accepting was wrong but I was not given attention.

I then put all the cash in deposit envelope in 2 Bank Accounts - one in my name and half of it in my husband - Roshan's account.

Even before I reached home, there was a phone call from bank that there was Rs. 500 currency note and they wanted me to go to bank again. My husband told that "Rina will not come back since she first insisted that the money be accepted at the counter and secondly - this is exactly the same cash that was given by Maninagar Post Office".

The Bank said - they will have to launch an F.I.R and Roshan advised them to go ahead and do it and insisted that they do an F.I.R. but we will not accept single cent less. Between 3:00 PM and 10:00PM night, we got 4 calls from ICICI with them trying to call me back to Maninagar and my husband answered them all and asked them to follow the normal process. My husband also stated to the branch manager that please make sure that ICICI preserves the camera recordings of opening the envelope with timestamp of opening and with currency numbers visible. They should also file an FIR and not destroy the fake note and under no circumstances should ICICI put less credit in our account. They should also keep recording of Rina's visit at counter and the interaction she had with the cashier where the cashier refused to accept the cash at the counter.

I feel so ticked off with this whole thing and I'm certainly going to take this up on the Internet. When Banks like ICICI don't accept cash at counter, what right they have to call the customer back and who knows how the fake note got it. They could have very well made it up. Why the heck they don't accept cash at counter! - this is illegal. It seems that ICICI has overgrown and finance ministry must control the activities of such growth that impacts customers. Today even 15 mins of time is valuable and ICICI thinks their time is valueble and customer's time is not - this is insance.

I run one of the fastest growing open source software company in Ahmedabad and am very very disappointed with ICICI.

Its simple. If you look at all the responses above see the pattern. The employees and the bank is in a cahoots. Im not a customer of ICICI i prefer my neighbourhood bank. But i have seen the instance infront of me and my neighbour went through all this. So i suggest start a Petition Online. Email the link to people your friends. and ask them to forward it and you will get some response. I was part of a petition and they reached 1 million people in 5 days. Link below.

I also got 3 last month and ICICI burned it infront of me and they didn't repay me. I doubt even the Banks are having a key role in this SCAM.

Looks India is filled with fake currecies now. Every one in 4 currency is a fake. IB should enquire about each and every real estate transaction happened in last 5 years. BTW Ministry will NOT do anything regarding this. Because of ALL THE CORRUPTED POLITICIANS. CORRUPTED POLITICIANS are the BIGGEST and EVER LASTING CURSE on INDIA.

You could see that indian economy will be a complete disaster in a year. This news is spreading oversees too and this will bring down the entire country. It will become like african coutries with currencies which will have NO VALUES. Its better to invest in dollars.

I have five savings accounts(2 SBI,UBI,PNB,ICICI) apart from the salary account(Rajastan Bank). I often visit other banks too for making draft, FD and cash deposit. But personally I have found SBI more transparent and fast in doing work. PSU banks(more in urban areas) have transformed them selves a lot.But people still hold the old belief.

And as far as fake currency issue from ATMs is concerned you will find such incidents mostly with ICICI Bank. I believe this to be the bank staff job.

Better to keep away from private banks mainly such as ICICI, these buggers are always of that kind involving in fake notes scams.
Charging excess service charge, sending unauthorized credit cards and still many, so pls citizens beware of private sector banks, SBI is the best service bank at present.

Hi,

seems to be banks are behind dispatching fake notes. ICICI seems to be no. 1 in this case. So friends better use cheque for huge transactions. And for small amount do 3-4 transactions like to get 1000.00Rs, do a transaction of 400.00/Rs 2 times and 200Rs 1 times, that way we can avoide fake notes. use your debit and credit card whenever possible and pay the money by cheque. I would like to again mention that ICICI is fatching lots of fake notes in ATM. We at ITPL bangalore have stoped withdrawing money from ICICI ATM, we prefer other banks.

My colleague had a similar instance of bank refusing to accept rs.500 since it was fake . He had the receipt of withdrawal and was making the payment within 10 mins. SBI directed him to the branch under which the ATM was manned and routed his querry to the central processing unit responsible for ATM operation / replenishments . It was found that the note has been dispensed from the particular ATM since it was tracked thru the serial nos despatched in the ATM network.

IMO banks cannot wash their hands asking for proof of withdrawal and on the contrary what is the proof that bank notes are checked for fakes befor eplacing in ATM and if yes is there any documentary evidence to prove .

Hi,

As of today ie,04.09.10 I have Drawn 9500/- from Canara Bank (Trinity Circle, Bangalore) ATM by 9.10 am wherein when I went to Canara bank to deposit the cash to my husaband's account, they found one particular 500note has fake. I was shock, since i drawn the cash from the same bank ATM. When I informed about the incident to the bank official, he straight away refused, saying they are not going to take any responsibility for the matter. This is not the first time, when I asked my colleague, they also faced similar kind of problem. As per my understanding the problem are happending from Bank, since those people are the main responsible for putting the cash in the ATM centres. Who ever read my message, kindly pass to all your well wishers. I hope our RBI will help us to sort this kind of issues in future.
